The Early History of the Biochemistry of Muscle Contraction

چکیده

Since antiquity, motion has been looked upon as the index of life. The organ of motion is muscle. Our present understanding of the mechanism of contraction is based on three fundamental discoveries, all arising from studies on striated muscle. The modern era began with the demonstration that contraction is the result of the interaction of two proteins, actin and myosin with ATP, and that contraction can be reproduced in vitro with purified proteins. The second fundamental advance was the sliding filament theory, which established that shortening and power production are the result of interactions between actin and myosin filaments, each containing several hundreds of molecules and that this interaction proceeds by sliding without any change in filament lengths. Third, the atomic structures arising from the crystallization of actin and myosin now allow one to search for the changes in molecular structure that account for force production. Mostly I will discuss how biochemical studies from 1941 to 1972 contributed to our understanding of contraction. I shall particularly focus on two aspects of the history: the work of the Szeged school, since the papers in the Studies from the Institute of Medical Chemistry University Szeged were and are not readily available; 1

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of electromyography measurements of abdominal muscles activity during different manoeuvres (pelvic floor muscle (PFM) contraction, abdominal hollowing and abdominal bracing with and without PFM contraction) in subjects with and without chronic low back pain (LBP). Materials & Methods: In this methodology research 21 subjec...

Does Muscle Fatigue Alter EEG Bands of Brain Hemispheres?

Background: Muscle fatigue has been known to influence brain activity, but very little is known about how cortical centers respond to muscle fatigue. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of muscle contraction and fatigue induced by two different percents of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) on Electroencephalography (EEG) signals.Material and Methods: In t...

Effect of Ankle Brace on the Activity and Co-Contraction of Ankle Muscles During Single-Leg Landing

Objectives: The results of a few studies about the effects of ankle brace on muscles function during the performance of different tasks are contradictory. Moreover, the effect of brace on the co-contraction of ankle muscles is undiscovered. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of brace usage on the ankle muscles activity and co-contraction during single-leg landing. Methods: Fi...

The effect of isometric contractions of upper and lower limb muscles on the ultrasonic thickness of the transversus abdominis muscle

Background: The transverse abdominis (TrA) muscle is one of the most important muscles that contribute to the stability of the lumbar spine. Strengthening of trunk muscles that have a significant role in trunk stability is very important in the field of professional sport, sport medicine and rehabilitation of patient with low back pain (LBP). Identifying the exercises that can improve the stren...

Preventive effects of ipratropium and salbutamol against insulin induced tracheal smooth muscle contraction in guinea pig model

Inhalational insulin was withdrawn from the market due to its potential to produce airway hyper-reactivity and bronchoconstriction. So the present study was designed to explore the acute effects of insulin on airway reactivity of guinea pigs and protective effects of salbutamol and ipratropium against insulin induced airway hyper-responsiveness on isolated tracheal smooth muscle of guinea pig. ...

Comparing the effects of IV infusion of 10% dextrose and 40 IU/L of oxytocin on uterine contraction after Cesarean section

Background: Uterine bleeding is an important side effect of cesarean section which is due to non contractile uterine. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of 10% dextrose (IV infusion) and 40 IU/L oxytocin (IV infusion) on uterine contraction. Materials and Methods: This research was a double-blinded randomized clinical trial (RCT) study. 120 women were equally included in the tw...
